Elmer Ellsworth Brown

Born in Kiantone, N. Y.,
1861. At the age of 12 he passed the county examination for teacher's
certificate. Returned to school, and graduated at 20 from Normal, Ill.,
University. Taught two years in New York, on year Principal Astoria
High School and was Superintendent at Belvidere. In 1887 entered
University of Michigan. In 1890 completed the course at University of
Halle; wrote his German Thesis and secured doctor's degree; 1891 was
Principal of high school at Jackson, Mich. and Acting Assistant Professor of
the year. Was called to the Pacific coast in 1892 to organize the
department of education i the University of California.
He has been a member of the N. E.
A. since 1891 and since 1897 a member of that cabinet of administration known
as the National council of Education, of which he is now President.
